The purpose of this activity is for players to tag others, who then join hands with the tagger, creating a growing chain of linked players. The goal is to avoid being tagged and becoming part of the chain, with the game continuing until all players have been caught and joined the chain. This engaging game is suitable for medium to large groups of children aged 6 and above, requiring no preparation or materials, making it an easy and enjoyable option for group play.

Rules for Chain Tag

  • Set up boundaries for the play area.
  • Nominate one person to be the tapper (‘It’).
  • The tapper must try to tag as many players as possible.
  • Players who are tagged join the tapper by holding hands, creating a chain.
  • All tagged players must follow the main tapper.
  • Other players must avoid the chain; if they touch it, they get tagged and become part of the chain.
  • The game continues until all players have been tagged and joined the chain.
  • The last person tagged becomes the next tapper, starting a new round.

How to play Chain Tag

  3. Runners Move Around: The runners move around freely in the designated play area, trying to avoid being tagged by the tapper.
  4. Tapper Tags Runners: As the tapper moves around, they aim to tag as many runners as possible. Once a runner is tagged, they join hands with the tapper, forming part of the chain.
  5. Chain Grows: With every new player tagged, the chain grows longer and more players join hands with the tapper. The chain must move together, making it increasingly challenging for runners to avoid being caught.
  6. Last Player Becomes Tapper: Once all runners have been tagged and joined the chain, the last person tagged becomes the new tapper. We then restart the game with this new tapper, and the process continues.
  7. Avoid Touching the Chain: Any runner who accidentally touches the chain is also considered tagged and must join hands with the tapper, making the chain even longer.
  8. Game Continues Until Everyone Is in the Chain: The game carries on until every player has been caught and joined the chain. At this point, we can determine a new tapper and start another round for continued fun and engagement.
