What is Halloween Tag?

Halloween Tag is a lively icebreaker game that is sure to get kids into the spooky spirit of the season. The purpose of this activity is to provide a fun and energetic way for group members to introduce themselves. To play, each participant is assigned a Halloween character such as a werewolf, mummy, or zombie. Two players are designated as “it” and call out one of the spooky characters. Those with that chosen character must then try to reach the other side of the room without being tagged by the players who are “it.” If they are tagged, they are sent to the “graveyard” and must sit down in the spot they were caught. The game continues until only two players remain uncaught, at which point they become the new players who are “it.” This simple yet exciting game is best suited for large groups of children aged 6-9 years old and requires no preparation or materials, making it a great last-minute addition to any Halloween party.

  8. Any tagged children become part of “it” and join in the next round, sitting down in a designated “graveyard” area.
  9. The game continues until only two players remain untagged; these players become the new “it” for the following round.
  10. Players can resurrect others sent to the “graveyard” by running under their outstretched arms and tapping them three times.

How to play Halloween Tag

  1. Choose a Halloween Character: I assign each child a spooky Halloween character such as a werewolf, mummy, or zombie. I make sure there are three different characters so that the group is split into three.
  2. Line Up Against a Wall: All the kids line up against a wall, except for two people who are “it.” These people stand in the middle of the room.
  3. Call Out a Character: The people who are “it” call out one of the spooky characters. If they call out “zombie,” all the kids assigned as zombies have to run to the other side of the room and touch the wall.
  4. Tag Zombies: The people who are “it” try to tap as many zombies as possible as they run across the room. Any tagged zombies must go to the “graveyard” and sit down in the spot where they were caught.
  5. Resurrect Players (Optional): In an alternative variation, players in the “graveyard” can be resurrected by other runners who tap them three times while running under their arms.
  6. Choose Another Group: The people who are “it” decide on another group to call out. This continues until there are only two people left that haven’t been caught.
  7. New People are “It”: The two remaining players become the next people who are “it,” and a new round begins.
  8. End of Game: The game ends when everyone has been caught or after a predetermined time limit, making it an exciting and engaging icebreaker activity for Halloween festivities.

Why I like Halloween Tag

As an avid fan of Halloween and group games, I find the Halloween Tag icebreaker to be a fantastic way to get into the spooky spirit. Here are a few reasons why I like it:

First, I appreciate how simple and quick this game is to set up and play. With no preparation or materials needed, it’s easy to start a game of Halloween Tag at any time. Plus, because it’s an active game that involves chasing and fleeing, it gets my blood pumping and energy levels up in no time.

Second, I enjoy the icebreaker aspect of this game. By assigning each group member a spooky Halloween character, everyone has a chance to introduce themselves in a fun and energetic way. This is especially useful for large groups where not everyone may know each other.

Third, I like that Halloween Tag can be played with any age group, making it a versatile game for all kinds of gatherings. Whether I’m playing with kids or adults, this game always gets people moving and laughing.

Finally, I appreciate the flexibility of the game. While the basic rules are simple, there are many variations and modifications that can be made to keep things interesting. For example, adding a rule where only the players who are “it” can send people to the “graveyard” adds an extra layer of strategy and competition.

Overall, Halloween Tag is a great icebreaker game that gets everyone moving, laughing, and having fun. Its simplicity, versatility, and flexibility make it a go-to game for any Halloween celebration.

Tips for making Halloween Tag more inclusive

  • Tip: Use Halloween-themed adaptive costumes: Consider providing adaptive costumes for children with mobility limitations to participate fully in the game. For example, wheelchair users can dress up as ghosts with white sheets and moveable eye holes.
  • Tip: Provide visual aids for instructions: To make the game more accessible to children with hearing impairments or non-native English speakers, use visual aids such as illustrations or diagrams of the rules and character roles in the game.
  • Tip: Offer seating alternatives to the “graveyard”: Instead of having kids sit on the floor when they’re tagged, provide alternative seating options like small stools or chairs for children with physical limitations. This will enable them to actively participate in the tagging aspect of the game.
  • Tip: Encourage teamwork and cooperation: Promote inclusivity by allowing kids to work together as a team to avoid being caught, rather than competing against one another individually. Team members can help each other cross the room safely or create strategies for evading capture.
  • Tip: Adjust game speed for diverse abilities: For children with different physical abilities and energy levels, allow them to play at their own pace by giving everyone the option to walk instead of run during the game. This will ensure that all kids can actively participate in Halloween Tag without feeling overwhelmed or left behind.
