How to play Sticks & Spoons

  1. Gather the materials: I need to gather the following materials: 4-foot sticks, spoons, a large bag of marbles (50+), plastic or styrofoam cups, and chairs. I make sure there is one stick, spoon, cup, and chair for each player.
  2. Prepare the equipment: I tape one spoon to the end of each 4-foot stick with the scoop part facing outwards. I use wooden spoons to avoid scratching the floor. Then, I arrange the chairs in a circle facing inwards and place the marbles in the center of the circle.
  3. Explain the rules: I explain the objective of the game is for each player to scoop up as many marbles as possible from the center of the circle into their own plastic cups using only their stick and spoon. Players are not allowed to touch the cup or the marbles with their hands, and they must stay seated for the entire game.
  4. Set the time limit: I set a timer for 5 minutes or until all marbles have been collected, whichever comes first.
  5. Distribute the equipment: I hand out the sticks with spoons attached and plastic cups to each player. I instruct them to place their cup on the floor by their feet.
  6. Start the game: I say “go” or another signal to start the game. Players use their stick and spoon to scoop up marbles and put them in their cups.
  7. End the game: When the time is up, I stop the game and instruct players to count how many marbles they have collected.
  8. Determine the winner: The player with the most marbles in their cup wins!

Optional variations:

  • Change the length of the game to work with the amount of time available.
  • Eliminate a player each round by removing the chair and marble cup of the person who collected the least number of marbles. Make the circle smaller until there are two players left, then play head-to-head until an Ultimate Sticks and Spoons champion is determined.

Tips for making Sticks & Spoons more inclusive

  • Use Lightweight Materials: Consider using lightweight materials for the sticks, spoons, and cups to accommodate players with physical limitations.
  • Choose Non-Slip Spoons: Opt for non-slip spoons, especially if you’re playing on a slippery floor, to ensure everyone can participate equally.
  • Offer Seating Options: Provide chairs with different heights and seating positions to accommodate players with mobility concerns or physical discomfort.
  • Adjust the Time Limit: Be flexible with the time limit to accommodate players who may need more time to collect marbles due to physical limitations or other factors.
  • Eliminate the Elimination Variation: Instead of eliminating players, consider adding points for each marble collected and announcing a “Top Collector” at the end of each round to maintain an inclusive atmosphere.
  • Promote Collaboration: Encourage players to work together in pairs or small groups to collect marbles, promoting teamwork and collaboration instead of competition.
  • Provide Visual Aids: Offer visual aids like large print instructions or sign language interpretation to make the game more accessible for players with hearing or visual impairments.
  • Create a Quiet Zone: Provide a designated quiet zone for players who may be sensitive to noise or easily distracted.
  • Offer Modifications: Encourage players to suggest modifications that would make the game more inclusive and enjoyable for everyone.
