What is Camouflage?

The Camouflage icebreaker game is a fun and engaging activity that I like to play with close-knit groups or as a way to help new groups get to know each other better. The purpose of the game is to relive the excitement of classic hide-and-seek, while adding a new twist to keep things interesting. In Camouflage, one player becomes the seeker and must find all the other players who are hiding around the room. If the seeker can’t find all the players within a time limit, the remaining players will be crowned the winner.

Camouflage is a great game for kids aged 5 and up, as well as teens, and can be played with any group size. The game requires no preparation or materials, making it easy to play on a whim. All you need is a large room or space with little hiding nooks, and a volunteer to be the seeker.

During the game, the remaining players must find places to hide while the seeker closes their eyes and counts to 10. After counting, the seeker will open their eyes and try to find all the hidden players without leaving their spot. The seeker can also call for a break, allowing all the remaining players to change their hiding spots before continuing the search.

Camouflage is a fun and active game that’s perfect for breaking the ice and bringing people together. It’s easy to learn and play, making it a great choice for any group activity. Plus, the added twist of the seeker having to find all the players within a time limit adds an extra layer of excitement and challenge to the classic hide-and-seek game.

Materials needed for Camouflage

  • Large room or space with little hiding nooks: Camouflage can be played in any large indoor or outdoor area that has places to hide. If playing outdoors, make sure to set boundaries for where players can hide.
  • Volunteer or game host: One player will need to volunteer as the seeker at the beginning of each round. If no one volunteers, the host can step in and play this role. The seeker is responsible for counting to 10 and trying to find the other players who are hiding.

Setting up for Camouflage

To set up for the Camouflage icebreaker game, you’ll need a large room or space with little hiding nooks. If you’re playing in an open space, be sure to draw the boundary on how far a player can hide to make the game fair to the seeker. No volunteers, counting, or breaking are required during the setup process. The most important aspect of setting up for Camouflage is ensuring that there is enough space for all players to hide and that the area is safe and free from any potential hazards. Additionally, if young children will be participating, it’s recommended to have adults supervise the hiding spots during gameplay.

How to play Camouflage

  1. Volunteer as the Seeker: I will volunteer to be the seeker or choose someone else to take on this role. The seeker is responsible for finding all the other players who are hiding.
  2. Find a Hiding Spot: Once the seeker closes their eyes and counts to 10, I will quickly find a place to hide in the designated area. I can be as creative as I want with my hiding spot, but I should make sure it’s not too obvious or easy to find.
  3. Stay Hidden: While the seeker is searching for me and the other players, I must remain hidden and quiet. If the seeker spots me, I am out of the game for that round.
  4. Change Hiding Spots (Optional): If the seeker announces a break and closes their eyes again while counting to 10, I can choose to change my hiding spot. This gives me another chance to avoid being found by the seeker.
  5. Follow Boundaries: If we are playing Camouflage in an open space, I must make sure to stay within the designated boundaries set by the host or organizer. This ensures a fair game for everyone involved.
  6. Play Multiple Rounds: The game ends when all players have been found or after 5 minutes have passed. We can then start a new round with a different seeker, or switch up the rules to keep things interesting.

Skills built with Camouflage

  • Running: Camouflage requires players to have good running skills as they need to quickly find hiding spots before the seeker finishes counting. This can help improve a player’s speed, agility, and overall fitness level.
  • Hiding: The game also develops a player’s ability to think creatively and strategically when it comes to finding hiding spots. By observing their surroundings and looking for places that are out of sight, players can hone their stealth skills and become better at blending in with their environment.
  • Teamwork: In larger groups, Camouflage can be played with multiple seekers, which requires teamwork and communication among the seekers to locate all the hiding players. This helps build trust and cooperation among the group members, making it an excellent icebreaker game.
  • Observation skills: The volunteer who is designated as the seeker must have good observation skills to spot the hiding players in the room. By practicing their visual scanning techniques and paying attention to details, the seeker can become better at identifying the location of hidden objects or people.
  • Time management: Camouflage has a time limit of 5 minutes, which requires players to manage their time wisely. Hiding players must find a spot quickly before the seeker finishes counting while the seeker must locate all the players within the given time frame. This can help improve a player’s ability to make decisions under pressure and prioritize tasks.

Why I like Camouflage

I enjoy playing the Camouflage icebreaker for several reasons. Firstly, it’s an active game that gets people moving and engaged with each other, making it a great way to break the ice in a group setting. The simplicity of the game also means that anyone can play, regardless of age or physical ability.

Another aspect I like about Camouflage is its flexibility in terms of location and group size. It can be played indoors or outdoors, and with as few as five players or as many as twenty. This makes it a versatile game that can be adapted to suit different settings and occasions.

Furthermore, the twist on the classic game of hide-and-seek adds an element of strategy and challenge. The seeker must not only find the hidden players but also identify their locations accurately. Meanwhile, the hiders need to choose hiding spots that are both difficult to detect and easy to leave during breaks.

Overall, Camouflage is a fun and engaging icebreaker game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. Its simplicity, versatility, and strategic elements make it an excellent choice for any group activity or social gathering.

Tips for making Camouflage more inclusive

  • Tip: Choose accessible hiding spots. Ensure that the hiding spots are easily accessible to all players, regardless of their physical abilities or limitations. Encourage players to be creative with their hiding spots, but also remind them to be mindful of others’ safety and comfort.
  • Tip: Use clear communication. Make sure everyone in the group understands the rules and objectives of the game. Use simple language and visual aids if necessary, and invite questions or concerns from participants. This will help create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and heard.
  • Tip: Encourage teamwork. Instead of having individual players hide, you can divide the group into smaller teams and have them work together to find hiding spots. This way, players who may struggle with hiding on their own can still participate and contribute to their team’s success.
  • Tip: Mix up the groups. If you’re playing multiple rounds of Camouflage, consider changing up the group composition for each round. This will give participants the opportunity to meet and interact with different people, promoting a more inclusive and connected atmosphere.
  • Tip: Be mindful of cultural differences. When choosing hiding spots or discussing game strategies, be sensitive to potential cultural differences among participants. Avoid making assumptions about others’ backgrounds or experiences, and strive to create an environment where everyone feels respected and valued.
  • Tip: Provide positive feedback. As the host, make sure to offer constructive and positive feedback throughout the game. Acknowledge players’ efforts and contributions, and celebrate their successes as a group. This will help foster a supportive and inclusive atmosphere where all participants feel appreciated and motivated to continue playing.
