What is Celebrity?

The Celebrity icebreaker is a engaging and interactive game that involves guessing celebrities based on clues, charades, and one-word descriptions. The purpose of this activity is to encourage teamwork, communication, and creativity while having fun. In this game, players write down the names of three celebrities or famous personalities and divide into two teams. During each turn, a player from the team (the clue giver) uses verbal clues, charades, or one-word descriptions to help their teammates guess as many names as possible within a one-minute timeframe.

The game consists of three rounds: Verbal Clues, Charades, and One Word Clues. In the first round, clue givers use descriptive clues similar to games like Taboo or Catchphrase. The second round involves charades, where clue givers cannot speak or make any noise at all. Lastly, in the third round, clue givers are only allowed to say one word per slip of paper.

This icebreaker is suitable for people of all ages and can accommodate 10-15 participants, making it an excellent choice for social gatherings, parties, or team-building events. It is also adaptable, allowing variations such as using props during the charades round or increasing/decreasing the number of celebrities based on group size. The Celebrity icebreaker offers a fun and dynamic way to build connections and foster camaraderie among participants. (Credits to Keri Allen for suggesting this game.)

How to play Celebrity

  1. Distribute slips of paper and writing utensils: Give each player three slips of paper and something to write with.
  2. Have players write down celebrity names: Instruct each player to think of three celebrities or famous people and write each name on a separate slip of paper.
  3. Divide into teams: Split the group into two teams and assign a scorekeeper to keep track of points.
  4. Set up the bag or hat: Collect all the slips of paper and place them in a bag or hat.
  5. Begin the first round with verbal clues: For each turn, the person who is “it” gives descriptive clues about the celebrity on the slip of paper, without saying the name or any related words. The team shouts out guesses and receives one point for each correct answer within the 1-minute time limit.
  6. Replenish the bag and start the second round with charades: After all slips have been used in the first round, place them back in the bag. For this round, the clue giver uses gestures instead of words to convey the celebrity’s identity. The team continues to guess and earn points for correct answers within the time limit.
  7. Return the slips to the bag and start the third round with one-word clues: After completing the second round, place all the slips back in the bag. For this final round, the clue giver can only say one word per slip. The team guesses and earns points for correct answers within the time limit.
  8. Add up scores from each round to determine the winner: At the end of the third round, calculate the total points earned by each team. The team with the most points wins the game.

Consider adding props during the charades round or adjusting the number of celebrity names per player based on group size. For larger groups, you can create more than two teams. This icebreaker was suggested by Keri Allen.

Why I like Celebrity

As someone who enjoys bringing people together for fun and engaging activities, I appreciate the Celebrity icebreaker game for several reasons. First and foremost, it is highly inclusive and adaptable to any group size or age range, making it an excellent choice for a wide variety of social situations.

One aspect of the game that I find particularly appealing is its clever structure, which provides plenty of variation and keeps players engaged from start to finish. By progressing through three distinct rounds with increasing levels of challenge, the Celebrity icebreaker ensures that everyone remains invested in the game and eager to see how their team performs.

In addition to its entertaining format, I also value the fact that the Celebrity icebreaker encourages communication, collaboration, and creativity among participants. Through the use of descriptive clues, charades, and one-word descriptions, players are encouraged to think critically and work together to solve puzzles, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose.

Finally, I enjoy the simplicity of the materials required for this game, which can be easily assembled using everyday items like slips of paper, pens, and a bag or hat. This accessibility makes it easy for anyone to organize and facilitate the Celebrity icebreaker, regardless of their experience with event planning or facilitation.

Tips for making Celebrity more inclusive

  • Encourage players to think of diverse celebrities: As the game facilitator, I make sure to remind players that celebrities can be from any field, such as entertainment, sports, politics, science, and more. This encourages players to think of a wider range of people and makes the game more inclusive for everyone.
  • Provide examples of different types of celebrities: To help players think of diverse celebrities, I give them examples from various fields and backgrounds. For instance, I might mention politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or Rigoberta Menchú, scientists like Jane Goodall or Neil deGrasse Tyson, and athletes like Serena Williams or Tom Daley.
  • Create categories for celebrity selection: To ensure a more inclusive mix of celebrities, I can introduce categories for players to consider when writing down their names. For example, I could ask them to think of a celebrity from each of the following categories: a woman, a person of color, someone from the LGBTQ+ community, and a person with disabilities.
  • Establish ground rules for clue giving: To make sure everyone has an equal opportunity to participate, I set clear expectations for clue giving. For example, I might instruct players to use clues that are easily understood by people of different ages, backgrounds, and cultures. Additionally, I encourage players to avoid using culturally specific references or inside jokes that may exclude others.
  • Promote a supportive environment: As the game facilitator, I create a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable participating. I do this by acknowledging each player’s contributions, celebrating their successes, and offering constructive feedback when necessary. This helps ensure that everyone feels valued and included throughout the game.
