Who’s My Match?

What is Who’s My Match??

The “Who’s My Match?” icebreaker is a fun and engaging game that encourages guests to interact with one another and discover their hidden identities. As the host, I prepare name-tags for each guest representing famous figures from popular partnerships. As guests arrive, they are given a random name-tag and instructed not to reveal their identity. The aim of the game is for each player to find the guest who holds the matching name tag by engaging in conversation and asking yes or no questions, without directly asking about the character’s name or using leading questions starting with “does your name…”

This icebreaker effectively promotes mingling and socializing among guests while adding an element of excitement and mystery. The game is suitable for groups of ten to twenty people or more, making it perfect for various events where people may not know each other well. Additionally, the activity results in funny photos when two players find their match, providing a memorable experience for all involved.

Materials needed for Who’s My Match?

  • Name-tags and pen/marker: You will need name-tags and a pen or marker to write the names of famous figures from famous partnerships on each name-tag. Both halves of the partnership should be represented on a name-tag.
  • Group of people: A group of ten to twenty people or more will make for a good game, but it certainly works fine for larger groups as well. This group will be the guests at your party who will participate in the game.

Setting up for Who’s My Match?

To set up for the “Who’s My Match?” icebreaker game, follow these steps as the host:

  1. Prepare name-tags for each guest with famous figures from well-known partnerships written on them. Ensure both halves of the partnership are represented on a name-tag (e.g., Pinky and The Brain, Beyoncé and Jay Z, Peanut butter and Jelly, Romeo and Juliet).
  2. As guests arrive at the party, give them a random name tag to wear without revealing its content.
  3. Inform guests to keep their identity hidden and only answer questions about it with “yes” or “no.”
  4. Prohibit direct questions about a character’s name or beginning letters when asking questions.
  5. Encourage players to ask other players about their profession, age, etc., while searching for their match.
  6. Inform participants that if they think they have found their match, both players should approach an organizer to confirm or not. If correct, both players can reveal their name tags to show they are “taken.” If not, keep searching.

How to play Who’s My Match?

  1. Prepare the name-tags: As the host, I prepare name-tags for each guest by writing down famous figures from well-known partnerships on them. I make sure to include both halves of the partnership on each name-tag. Examples include “Pinky” and “The Brain,” “Beyoncé” and “Jay Z,” “Peanut butter” and “Jelly,” and so on.
  2. Give out the name-tags: I give each guest a random name-tag upon their arrival at the party, instructing them to keep their identity hidden and not reveal it to others.
  3. Play the game: As a player, my goal is to find the guest who has the matching name-tag. To do this, I engage in conversation with other guests but can only answer questions about my identity with “yes” or “no” responses. Additionally, I cannot directly ask others if they are my match by asking about their character’s name.
  4. Verify a match: If I believe I have found my match, we both approach an organizer to confirm our pairing. If successful, we display our name-tags to indicate we are “taken” and continue playing the game until everyone has found their match.
  5. Use curveballs: As the host, I can add difficulty by including similar pairs like Cagney and Lacey for players looking for Starsky and Hutch. This makes it more challenging for players to guess their partners based on broad characteristics.
  6. Tailor to your audience: Consider the group you are organizing when creating name-tags. Focus on partnerships from celebrity culture, literature, or film depending on what suits them best.
  7. Ask strategic questions: As a player, I ask other players about their profession, age, and so on to help narrow down potential matches.
  8. Take fun photos: Once two players have found their match, I encourage them to pose as the people on their name-tags for a memorable photo opportunity.

Why I like Who’s My Match?

I like the “Who’s My Match?” icebreaker game because it is a fun and engaging way to encourage interaction between guests at a party or event. The game requires players to communicate with each other, ask questions, and listen carefully to the responses in order to find their match. This makes it an excellent tool for breaking the ice and helping people get to know each other.

Another reason I enjoy this game is that it can be easily adapted to suit different groups of people. The host can choose famous partnerships that are relevant to the interests and knowledge of the guests, making the game more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Additionally, the rule that players can only answer yes or no when answering questions about their identity adds an extra layer of challenge and intrigue to the game.

Finally, I appreciate that the game encourages mingling and socializing, rather than isolating guests in small groups or pairs. This makes it a great option for events where people may not know each other well, as it helps to create a friendly and inclusive atmosphere. Overall, I find “Who’s My Match?” to be a fun and effective icebreaker that can help make any event more enjoyable and memorable.

Tips for making Who’s My Match? more inclusive

  • Tip: Use diverse partnerships. Make sure to include a variety of famous partnerships from different backgrounds, cultures, and fields, so that all guests can feel represented and included.
  • Tip: Avoid gendered assumptions. When giving out name-tags, try not to make assumptions about a guest’s gender identity based on their appearance. Offer a range of identities that reflect various gender expressions.
  • Tip: Include accessibility options. Consider creating large print name-tags or offering Braille name-tags for guests with visual impairments. This will help ensure everyone can participate fully in the game.
  • Tip: Use respectful language. When crafting your questions and instructions, use person-first language (e.g., “person with a disability” instead of “disabled person”) to promote respect and inclusivity.
  • Tip: Encourage open communication. Remind guests that they can feel comfortable expressing their identity preferences or boundaries during the game. Create a safe space for all participants by emphasizing kindness, empathy, and understanding.
